Fresh analysis indicates that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users purchasing such medications should be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Experts believe the way of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Use
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural management.
