No fewer than 13 people perish and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” declared the head of state.

The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
