Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in several interviews following England's loss in the second Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, he said his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There's no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
